SEPTEMBER 2017 STORIES
ENG: "I came to University of Nova Gorica as an exchange student. The cosiness of this young town, had charmed me enough to prolong my staying here. I travel around the world a lot and I always like to go back to my homeland Ukraine, but for now this is the place where I belong." |

Jernej in Zala KraigherSLO: "V Novo Gorico smo prišli leta 1948, čeprav takrat o mestu še ni bilo sledu. Ob Kostanjevem drevoredu - današnja Erjavčeva - je stala velika opekarna, v kateri so bile trgovina, mlekarna, mesnica, frizer in nekaj stanovanj. Čez polje so se razprostirale njive in brajde, rastlo je raznovrstno sadno drevje, največ je bilo češenj. Vmes so bile razpršene kmečke hiše. Nekatere so še dolgo ostale med kasneje zgrajenimi bloki."

ENG: "We came to Nova Gorica in 1948, although there wasn't a trace of the town as we know it. Like the rest of newcomers, we also lived in the 'Russian blocks'. Children would play on heaps of sand and construction material, which was located between the buildings. On the main road, there was a narrow track where a train with mining wagons ran. We hung on it on our way to Solkan school. On the Avenue of chestnut trees - today's Erjavčeva street - there was a large brickyard in which there was a grocery, a dairy, a butcher, a hairdresser and some dwellings. There were farmlands and vineyards where various fruit trees would grow, the most widespread being cherry trees. Farms were scattered among the fields and some of them remained for a long time among the blocks that were built later."
ENG: "We have a lot in common, but everything tastes of beauty. We develop joint and engaged initiatives for people who want more than the mediocre ..." |

Hitro sem se prilagodil in ljudje so me dobro sprejeli.
ENG: "I came to Nova Gorica from another part of the world, that is Mexico. I used to live in the proximity of the sea, so I'm glad that Nova Gorica's location is also close to the coast and I don't feel homesick. Compared to other places in Slovenia this town is unique. I managed to adapt quickly and people here accepted me well. My wish is to have a home and start a family here." |

Potem pobere eno za drugo in z nje odpihne prah. To dela v temačni sobi zagrnjeni s škrlatnimi zavesami. Prah v vrtincih kroži po njej. Ko pobere še zadnjo besedo in jo poljubi, odpre levo okno. Pogled na njen vrt. Same rdeče vrtnice. V sobo posije sonce. Obrne nov list. Stopi do desnega okna. Odpre ga. In nemo gleda v daljavo. Skozi sobo zaveje veter in ona zaspi."

ENG: "She puts the words in a pile and leaves them forgotten, so they get dusty. Then she picks one by one and blows the dust away. She does it in a dusky room with the purple curtains drawn. Dust swirls all around. When she picks up the last word and kisses it, she opens the left window. A view on her garden all in red roses. Sunlight streams in. Sunrays reflect from specks of dust. Everything shimmers. The room turns into a fairytale. Magic. But the room is stuffy and it is almost impossible to breathe. She coughs but doesn't mind. She is in love with this magic, with the illusion she conceived herself. She is dancing now, chasing sequins of dust particles. Her dark skirt glitters in the sunlight. She spins and spins. For a moment she becomes nothing but a vortex of dust. Then she stops. The dust deposits and she starts staring at the words. They are clean now and can be used again. She turns a new page, steps towards the right window, opens it and gazes into the distance speechlessly. The wind blows through the room and she falls asleep."
Rok Černic in Kaja StegovecSLO: "Nova Gorica - mesto mladih?

ENG: "Nova Gorica – town of the young? It is true that our 'town of roses' is a young town, but in every city, there are young people; those at heart and those according to their Personal Identification Number. In what is Nova Gorica supposed to be different from other cities? What does the community offer to young people on their way to a successful career? It offers us summer parties in the centre, various workshops, lectures...
There are still lots of young people here and elsewhere looking for an opportunity to create or achieve goals (other than a full-time job) but live in apartment blocks, lacking space, basic experience for starting a business, and money for the realization of their dreams.
So, if the world really 'stands on the young', then give us this opportunity, common spaces with materials processing equipment (take the example of RogLab in Ljubljana), and thus enable the connection between the old and young, experienced, ambitious and curious locals, but above all, that knowledge and wishes for something new remain at home and spread through the local environment outwards to the world."

ENG: "I grew up in Branik, but since I can remember Nova Gorica has held a special place in my life. My earliest memories are connected with this place as I spent a lot of time with my grandma who lives here. She used to take me to the Bevkov square where I would feed and run after pigeons. Afterwards, at grammar school here I learnt that 'I think, therefore I am' and sometimes even asked myself 'To be or not to be?'. Although I'm currently studying in Ljubljana and if I happen to travel a lot, I will always return. Here are my friends and family with whom I reminisce and create new memories – this is essential for me so I cannot do without Nova Gorica. It will always be part of my life and I know that each one who ever lived here left a mark - if nothing else, because of my prolonged feeding there are certainly more pigeons here than there would be without me – you're welcome!"
ENG: "Most people leave Primorska to go study in central Slovenia. I went the other way around. I've been in Nova Gorica for some years now and when I'm elsewhere I often think of the 'Slovenian California', especially of evenings with my friends when we drink beer and always find something to talk about. |

Some people say there's no life in Nova Gorica (for students and for all others), but I say it depends on the individual and his will to get one."
|
ENG: "Although I've lived in Ljubljana for quite a few years and rarely return home, I'm attached to my town through beautiful memories. Memories of endless hours of roller skating, summer happenings and visiting my beloved PDG (The Primorje Drama Theatre), where I was introduced to the magical world of theatre that I still love ..." |

We're proud that we've succeeded to enthuse many children to lead a sporty lifestyle and that some of them have also become top sports people."

ENG: "In the semesters 1947-1948 I was in my first year of the grammar school in Šempeter pri Gorici; at this newly founded school, lessons started in November 1947. Right before the school year ended, on 13 June 1948, the students participated in a work action where we laid Nova Gorica founding stone when the construction of high-rise buildings started in this town. With picks and shovels, we dug the foundations for one of the 'Russian blocks'. I also participated in another work action, that is the building of Solkan train stop, which was a priority closely connected to the formation of Nova Gorica. That is because the headquarters of Okrajni ljudski odbor Gorica (Gorica local committee) were located in Solkan. For us, students from Solkan, this stop enabled a better connection with Šempeter, as it similarly did for students from the Soča Valley who attended junior secondary school in Solkan.
From the beginnings of its building up to now I've been following the development of Nova Gorica and I feel wonderful for taking part in creating its current image."

Matej ArčonSLO: "Rodil sem se v Novi Gorici in z njo živim. Nova Gorica je lepa in v Novi Gorici je lepo.
ENG: "I was born in Nova Gorica and I live with it. Nova Gorica is beautiful and it is beautiful to live here. I keep realizing over and over again how much I'm attached to it. Its charm lies in the fact that it is a town within a park, green and clean, and I'm happy that more and more people are getting aware of it. I often ponder … what a privilege it is that Nova Gorica is my town. I simply like it." |

Lucija DevetakSLO: "Draga Nova Gorica.
ENG: "Dear Nova Gorica. I'm currently living far enough so I don't see you every day. Although I'm elsewhere you remain - besides Solkan where I was born – my favourite place. I always like returning to you and discovering your ever changing image as well as reminiscing about all those coffees on Bevkov square." |
